(From To Be Marine)
I've been told my best stuff comes out at night, so here goes...
When a unit comes under fire, it's first instinct is to bunker down, hit the deck, whatever your term for it, it happens, and usually it's a good way to keep from being shot before you can react. But, after you've gained cover, as the leader of such a unit, you've got to move forward and kill the enemy. How do do do it?
SHOOT, MOVE and COMMUNICATE. These 3 words may seem to be a little simplistic, but they are the essential building blocks of a successful forward movement. After you've taken cover, you're first priority needs to be to identify the enemy's position, and once you do, make it known to everyone with you. Usually the best way to do this is to yell. Realize this: if the enemy is shooting at you, they already know where you are, so stealth won't play a large part in this battle. To be argumentative, using stealth can help throw the enemy off guard by disguising your intentions, but if the enemy can't hear you, they will be looking for movement or activity. Yelling can give them a lot of information to process, and give you a few seconds to take charge of the situation. After you've obtained situational awareness, you need to move. Unless you are defending a position, maneuvering is the best way to find and exploit an enemies weak spot. If no one else is moving, you need to do so, and get covering fire from your troops before you do. If no one follows you because they are scared, begin to yell at them and insult them, push their buttons until they are more mad at you than they are scared of being hit. And when they do move, tell them about the brilliant position they've just occupied.
If you continue to maneuver, the enemy will have to react, which gives you the advantage. As long as you are acting and they are reacting, you have the advantage. Whatever you did was not what they expected, so they are trying to come up with a plan to deal with the new situation.
Today's workshop was brought to you by the number "thirteen", the letter "T" and the color "green".
